An almost uncontrollable desire of every traveller when visiting a new and exciting place is to get a good vantage point. A comprehensive and extra-special perspective over a new destination. Taking panoramic pictures or just enjoying the view. Feeling like you’re above the rest of the world and breathing in all the spectacles that lay before you. Viewpoints that never disappoint.
Whether you’re seeking higher ground to enjoy a magical uninterrupted sunset, or simply a chance to take a moment away from the hustle and bustle of street level, Barcelona boasts a number of exceptional viewpoints, but perhaps the most magnificent and magnetic can be found in one of Barcelona’s most traditional neighbourhoods. The Carmel Bunkers. A unique enclave with a thrilling history behind it.
From Civil War anti-aircraft guns to one of the best views in Barcelona
The Carmel Bunkers viewpoint is located in an area known as Turó de la Rovira. A privileged lookout point that hasn’t gone unnoticed by those who, throughout the city’s long history, have inhabited these lands. The site offers a 360 degree panoramic view of Barcelona. Naturally, the ideal location for spotting the enemy and controlling what went on below. As such, during the Spanish Civil War, a series of anti-aircraft batteries were installed in Turó de la Rovira, designed to defend against the constant bombings the Catalan capital suffered during the war.
Once the war came to an end, the area fell into disrepair. People quickly moved into the abandoned barracks, where they lived in poor conditions. But the 1992 Olympic Games breathed new life into the region, and almost two decades on, the Carmel Bunkers have been refurbished, turning them into very popular tourist attractions. Today, lots of visitors make the trip to this special site on a daily basis, either by car, public transport or simply walking through the leafy and very picturesque Parc del Guinardó.
Carmel Bunkers: A panoramic view of Barcelona with the Mediterranean as the perfect backdrop
Sunrise and sunset, when the sun illuminates the magical silhouette of the city, are the best times of day to enjoy the great vantage point at the Carmel Bunkers. It’s the only spot in the entire city that offers a full panoramic view of Barcelona, complete with the glistening Mediterranean as the most magnificent backdrop.
The imposing Sagrada Familia, Montjuic, Tibidabo, the perfectly square streets of Eixample, the winding ones of Carmel, Parque de la Ciudadela… Barcelona in its entirety is right at your fingertips from up here as you enjoy a picnic, a relaxing chat, reading a book or simply some good company.
It’s not surprising that the Carmel Bunkers have also been depicted in cinema over the years. In fact, it was the perfect setting for one of the most passionate scenes in ‘Tengo ganas de ti’ starring Mario Casas. And precisely from that moment on, the popularity of this Barcelona viewpoint soared exponentially, and few who visit Barcelona can resist the temptation of climbing to new heights to see our wonderful city in all its glory from above.
